How Skin Repairs Itself At Night

While we sleep, our bodies produce hormones and antioxidants that accelerate skin repair and cell regeneration, helping to maintain a healthy and youthful-looking complexion. Our experts explain how to harness this natural circadian rhythm with a nighttime skincare routine.

What Happens To Skin At Night?

While melanin and antioxidants are naturally produced to shield the skin during the day, at night, the body works to repair damage.

In the prelude to sleep, between 7 and 11pm, skin becomes more permeable, allowing topical treatments and repairing ingredients to be better absorbed. The production of melatonin (the sleep hormone) also increases, enhancing feelings of tiredness and improving the skin’s ability to repair itself.

Between 11pm and 4am, the human growth hormone accelerates cell regeneration, while encouraging the production of antioxidant enzymes to repair the oxidative damage caused by free radicals, pollution, and UV rays.

How To Support Overnight Skin Repair

A good nighttime skincare routine should support this natural repair process by feeding the skin with nourishing vitamins, minerals and hydrators. Exfoliating ingredients, like salicylic acid or retinal, should be applied to encourage natural cell renewal.

A 5-Step Nighttime Skincare Routine

  1. Cleanse
  2. Tone
  3. Apply Serum
  4. Use Eye Cream
  5. Hydrate with a Night Cream

Step 1: Cleanse

Start your nighttime skincare routine with a deep cleanse to remove the dirt, impurities and pollutants that have settled on the skin throughout the day.

The Omorovicza Thermal Cleansing Balm harnesses calcium and magnesium-rich Hungarian Moor mud to draw out impurities and cleanse away makeup, leaving skin feeling clean, soft and hydrated. Using circular motions, massage a small amount onto a dry face, then remove using a damp cleansing cloth.

Step 2: Tone

An exfoliating toner can help promote overnight cell renewal, while clarifying, brightening and reviving dull-looking skin.

The Omorovicza Acid Solution blends glycolic and lactic acid with caviar lime and salicylic acid to gently exfoliate, promote skin cell renewal, hydrates, plumps, and evens skin tone. After cleansing, pour a few drops into the palm of your hand, and pat over the face and neck to hydrate, refine and smooth. Alternatively, apply using a cotton pad.

Expert Tip: When using acid products, use an SPF as part of your morning skincare routine.

Step 3: Apply Serum

Stimulate optimal nighttime skin repair with a nourishing and rejuvenating night serum, like the newly-launched Omorovicza Midnight Renewal.

Formulated with an innovative form of retinal, it stimulates collagen and boosts elasticity, helping to reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. Bioactive microalgae shield
skin from the damaging effects of stress on the skin, while a nurturing combination of polyglutamic acid and oat lipid hydrate and repair the skin barrier. By morning, skin looks plump, smooth and radiant. Apply to the face and décolletage after cleansing and toning.

Step 4: Use Eye Cream

Prone to dark circles and fine lines, the eye contour is 20 times thinner than the skin on the rest of the face. Protect the delicate area by adding a nourishing eye treatment to your nighttime skincare routine.

The Gold Eye Lift blends colloidal gold with vitamins A and C to lift, firm and brighten the eye contour. Gently dab along the eye socket after applying serum and before using a night cream.

Step 5: Hydrate With A Night Cream

To help skin repair itself overnight faster and more efficiently, add a restoring and hydrating night cream to your evening ritual.

The Rejuvenating Night Cream is formulated with hazelnut peptides that work to minimize the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, lending skin a plump, firm and rejuvenated appearance. Massage the buttery night cream onto the face and neck.
