Lessons on acids and Skincare

August 21st, 2017

Acids; five letters; one word. Much has been said about acids and skincare but what exactly are they? Why should we be adding these to our skincare regime? Read on to discover how these magical ingredients can transform your skin.

First and foremost, it is important to know that acids in correct dosages are actually good for your skin. If used consistently,  they can actually make your skin clearer, brighter and more vibrant. Acids naturally accrue in our body and subsequently the skin. They are necessary for digestion, protein and hormone production, genetic coding and some forms of energy production.

When used in skincare, acids are regarded as exfoliating ingredients – they remove the build-up of skin cells which clogs pores, causes breakouts, or dry and dull skin. As we age our cellular turnover slows down, making the skin more vulnerable to environmental damage such as UV rays and pollution. That is one of the main reasons why it is important to  incorporate acids into your routine, in order to increase the rate of skin cell metabolism and to normalise the cellular repair mechanisms.

In order to see the best results when using these powerful ingredients, one must understand the different types of acids and what they do to your skin:

Alpha Hydroxy Acids – this acid ‘family’ (glycolic, lactic, mandelic and citric) works to slough away dead skin cells and improve the skin’s moisture levels. It is perfect for normal and dry skin types. If you want to learn more about them click here. You can find these acids in our Refining Facial Polisher, Copper Peel and Blue Diamond Resurfacing Peel.

Ascorbic Acid – also known as Vitamin C, ascorbic acid is an antioxidant and has powerful brightening properties. It has the ability to  shield the skin, stimulates collagen production and reverses environmental damage. Great for all skin types. To learn more about this acid, click here. You can find it in our Gold Night Drops, Gold Flash Firming Serum, Blue Diamond Eye Cream, Gold Eye Lift, Gold Rescue Cream, Blue Diamond Super Cream, Elemental Emulsion, Intensive Hydralifting Cream, Mineral Touch, Complexion Corrector and Mineral UV Shield.

Amino Acids – these stimulate the production of collagen and elastin, strengthening the skin to reverse the early signs of ageing. Suitable for all skin types you can find these acids in our Ultramoor Mud Mask, Omoressence, Intensive Hydralifting Cream and the Blue Diamond Collection. If you want to learn more about this ingredient please click here.

Glycolic Acid – much more than an exfoliator, this acid increases cellular turnover, evens skin tone, sheds dead skin cells, unclogs pores and stimulates collagen production. Perfect for dry, oily, blemish prone and ageing skin. To learn more about this acid click here.

Lactic Acid – our own muscles release lactic acid during any type of exercise. In skincare, this ingredient is made from the fermentation of milk or fruits. It resurfaces the skin, leaving a brighter, smoother and even complexion. Perfect for all skin types but specially for sensitive skin. For more information about this acid please click here. You can find Lactic Acid in our Copper Peel.

Lactobionic Acid – not to be confused with Lactic Acid, Lactobionic Acid smoothes the skin without causing irritation. As it is bio-available, the skin easily absorbs this  ingredient and it is perfect for sensitive skin. If you want to learn more click here. This acid is included in our Blue Diamond Resurfacing Peel and Refining Facial Polisher.

Hyaluronic Acid – it restores and replenishes, and works wonderfully to plump and hydrate the skin. This acid can hold up to a thousand times its own weight in water, being perfect for all skin types including dehydrated and sensitive skin. You can find this acid in our Blue Diamond Super Cream, Intensive Hydralifting Cream, Gold Hydralifting Mask, Instant Plumping Mask, Instant Perfection Serum, Oxygen Booster and Perfecting Lip Balm. To read more about Hyaluronic Acid click here.

Salicylic Acid – it is anti-bacterial and works to control acne, unclog pores and reduces the production of oil. It also has a powerful anti-inflammatory effect, which calms the skin and relieves redness. You can find this acid in our new Midnight Radiance Mask. To learn more click here.

Retinoic Acid – a form of Vitamin A, naturally found in our body and also known as retinol. It breaks down collagen, improves skin moisture and increases cellular turnover. It is the best acid to use for ageing skin. You can find this acid in our Gold Eye Lift, Gold Flash Firming Serum and Rejuvenating Night Cream.
