Do you need a moisturiser if you have oily skin?

Best Moisturisers for Oily Skin

Do you need a moisturiser if you have oily skin? This is a common question for a common skincare concern. And whilst it might seem counterintuitive the answer in short is yes! Regardless of your skin type, moisturising is still considered an essential step to caring for your skin.

Understanding how Moisturisers work

Moisturisers increase the water content in the skin keeping skin moist and supple. However it is excess sebum, a naturally occurring oil produced by the skin who is the culprit that attracts dirt and debris that clogs pores and causes breakouts. When oily skin is dehydrated, it may produce even more oil to compensate the lack of moisture. By slowing the evaporation of moisture on the face, sebum producing cells shut down. It’s also important to moisturise if you are using acne or blemish treatments that are stripping in nature and can cause over-drying.

Choosing the Right Moisturiser for Oily Skin

A common misconception with moisturisers is that they don’t have to be thick, heavy and greasy. Choosing a product that is more specifically formulated to address your oily skin concern is key to avoiding breakouts, shine and clogged pores. One tip when choosing a moisturiser for oily skin is to pick a product that is light and fast absorbing so look for mists, gels and lightweight creams or lotions. Some of our favourites include:

A mist such as the Magic Moisture Mist is a great option as the fine spray provides weightless hydration with a formulation that is 80% Hungarian Thermal Water and 20% nourishing, antioxidant oils. This is also great for combination skin as you can spritz on targeted areas.

If you’re looking for something with a slightly thicker texture, the Balancing Moisturiser is a cooling gel-cream that hydrates and also regulates sebum production. It also contains exotic fruit extracts which minimises pores and brightens the complexion.

An oil-free lotion such as the Elemental Emulsion will give added nourishment and hydration with Hyaluronic Acid. It also contains Marine Exopolysaccharide to reduce shine by absorbing and trapping excess sebum.
